Pieces Of My Soul (For D. Frigo)

5 Dec

i never fully rest, i never cease or halt
i’m listening for the music that my brother would exalt
and these streets are made of lonely, and the lamps are dark as death
and the wind is like a master who has swallowed up my breath

and i remember joy, we had our fill of fun
i’m finished with the pain that i’ve given everyone
i remember smiles, and laughter was the goal
and all the songs my brother played were pieces of my soul

my face, it bears the beatings and the slaps of cold remorse
but the music and its messenger have taken their own course
and those magic carpet visions now go by without a sound
and the words that i would give to him, i carry them around

and i remember joy, we had our fill of fun
i’m finished with the pain that i’ve given everyone
i remember smiles, and laughter was the goal
and all the songs my brother played were pieces of my soul

now i sing what i remember, and i voice the tones of tears
as i honor him with melody, remembering future years
turn out the sun and darken the moon, let the starlight fade
the earth has lost her musical soul, his rapture, yet, has stayed

and i remember joy, we had our fill of fun
i’m finished with the pain that i’ve given everyone
i remember smiles, and laughter was the goal
and all the songs my brother played were pieces of my soul
